Artificial T cell engineered by introducing T cell genes into a HEK-293 cell (red cell). Upon interaction with an antigen presenting cell (blue), signalling occurrs by the recruitment of kinase ZAP70 (green) to the interface between the two cells.  
T cell mediated immunity is initated by contact between a T cell (a whilte blood cell, red) and an antigen-presenting cell (blue, which may be infected with a pathogen.

Jurkat T cells were placed on planar lipid bilayers containing ICAM-1 (adhesion ligand, red) and anti-TCR antibody (green). The two segregated into distinct clusters and are transported to the cell center.
